‘I feel great’ says Watson before taking on Flipkens

HEATHER WATSON is confident that her poor run of form going into this year’s Wimbledon will not affect her chances of progressing deep into the draw at the All England Club.

The 26-year old Sarnian has endured arguably her worst ever Wimbledon warm-up period losing in the first round of three recent grass court events at Surbiton, Birmingham and Eastbourne.

The exception to the rule came at Nottingham where Watson at least managed to reach the second round before exiting to Johanna Konta.

‘To be honest I haven’t even been thinking about Wimbledon,’ said Watson who has been drawn against Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium in the first round of the women’s singles.

‘I focus on every week, week by week. I don’t look too far ahead. That’s just always how I am. I don’t think about anything in the mornings apart from the girl I’m going to play that day, how I’m going to play her, how I’m going to approach it. Nottingham is Nottingham. Birmingham is Birmingham. You just take it one at a time.

‘Even though this year my results have been up and down – mainly down – I actually feel great. I’ve been playing well but sometimes you just don’t win matches.

‘I feel like I’m striking the ball super well and I’m very fit and I’m in a good place. Anything can happen. Hopefully it’s this year.’
