Vance: ‘I’d love to coach from stand’
TONY VANCE says he would love to coach from an elevated perch in the Footes Lane stand, but fears the Green Lions support would not welcome it.
In outlining how he and fellow GFC coaches Steve Sharman and Colin Fallaize will operate this season, Vance says he would love to be able to get a better overall view of play from the stand.
‘I’ve got to be honest, there is a huge frustration in me from the footballing managing point of view, but I’d love to sit in the stand and work from there and analyse from there. But unfortunately the football public don’t allow managers to do that these days.
‘You’ve got a much better view [from the stands] and I’d love to be able to that, I’d love to have that approach and might try and do it – but the problem is that I’m not sure I could do that and be able to do my job because people would be given my opinion too much.
‘It’s really something I want to try and look at, though, and link it to the analysis as well.’
The Green Lions’ manager says the coaching team will work differently for the season ahead, one which starts this Saturday away at Whyteleafe.
‘What we’ve got to try and do is use the assets of Steve, “Fal” and myself in the best way possible and Steve wants to coach, “Fal” wants to coach and of course I want to as well.
‘So, what we are aiming to deliver is that I will work on the analytical side of things, look at the data and the stats and work with the players on video analysis, which is quite time consuming, and bring some more of the sports science in.
‘With “Fal” we’ve got to use his strengths better, so he’s been working on the conditioning side of things and with that in mind he’s created an outdoor gym down at Victoria Avenue where he is using that for the players.
‘He’s got programmes in place for rehabs to keep the guys ticking over and as far as Steve’s concerned, he’s now an A licence coach and we’ve got to use that ability. So Steve is going to be head of the coaching and I’ve given him some tasks to look at, but on match days it will stay the same.’
