Quadruple-chasing Cobo keep the flag flying
COBO will contest the CI League Final against Old Victorians in September after routing Jersey side Walkovers and nicking second spot in the qualifying table from under the noses of St Ouen Springfield.
And with a domestic treble under their belts, the ‘Seagulls’ now attempt a clean sweep of titles in a campaign going from strength to strength.
Even before the outcome in Jersey was known skipper Olly Newey was heralding a strong season for the club from the west coast.
‘I think we’ve got to be happy with it really. All season we’ve been pretty good and although we’ve lost games, including a couple of times to Griffins – once in the local league and once in the CI League – and then against Wanderers, we’ve beaten all the Jersey teams we have played,’ he said.
On the last day of the league schedule, it could not have gone a whole lot better for Newey’s side who shot out Walkovers for just 86 in 28 overs, Lee Savident inducing a stunning collapse with figures of 5 for 2.
They reached their victory target for the loss of three wickets, then it was a case of waiting and hoping for news from the College ground in Jersey where leaders St Ouen Springfield had been shot out for 136 by second-placed OVs.
St Ouen Springfield, beaten by Cobo a week earlier, could not turn things around and with OVs triumphing in style they lost out to the Guernsey side.
At the College Field locally, Luke Le Tissier hit a fine undefeated 130 to dominate Griffins’ 228 for 3, but it wasn’t enough.
With Lucas Barker and Matt Stokes going past three figures for the first wicket long before the midway point, Griffins were facing another hefty CI loss in what has been a testing end to a campaign which promised so much.
Ultimately, the Wanderers first wicket pair secured their individual tons, in Stokes' case his third straight CI hundred for Wanderers.
