CI League could grow with a separate T20

OLLIE NEWEY, Cobo’s Island all-rounder and weekend captain, has called for a second Channel Islands league, so good is the existing one.

After leading his side to the 2018 CI final against Old Victorians with a seven-wicket clinching victory over Walkovers, Newey said the revived league had been brilliant. But, he suggested, there is scope for more.

Newey would like to see a T20 CI league run alongside the 45-over, one day competition.

‘I think it is absolutely brilliant [the league]. The last two years have revitalised domestic cricket and, hopefully, I’d like to see them expand it more, if they can, whether that is by playing each other twice or including a T20 tournament.’

Newey believes the players would be up for such a thing.

‘I’ve spoken to a few of the Jersey lads and you could do a T20 version and us go over and have three teams at each ground. That way you’d get two games in one day.

‘I think that would be an interesting concept.

‘If they could do that it would be great, especially when there is only three sides [here] and that gets very samey as you know the opposition.’

Newey, who will be part of Guernsey’s squad for the inaugural T20 inter-insular weekend coming up this Friday and Saturday, says the CI competition has been more preferable to the Sussex League enterprise which had operated for two seasons preceding this one.

Mark Latter, the GCB’s chief executive, confirmed it was one of several ideas that has been discussed to improve domestic competition matters further, including a junior version.
