Vance encouraged despite defeat

BOTTOM of the table after back-to-back defeats was not the start Green Lions players and fans envisaged.

But Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat against supposed big-spending Ashford United was harsh on Tony Vance’s side who bossed a goalless first half, failed to take a couple of great chances and then paid for a horror 10 minutes early in the second half.

Ashford, of course, were deserving and comfortable winners, but Vance was far from despondent.

‘I’ve just told the players we have gone toe to toe with probably the team that will be up there at the top and the difference in resources in terms of playing budgets is massive.

‘So, for us to have gone toe to toe with them is encouraging, particularly as, to be honest, we outplayed them in the first half.

‘The only thing is we didn’t score and we deserved a goal.’

Ashford, who have won two from two, looked classy enough, but they took all of 51min. to find the target after Cal Stanton had enjoyed as quiet a first half he is likely to experience all season.

But at the other end the goals were not forthcoming and two headed goals put the visitors on the road to victory.

‘If we can get that little bit [goal scoring] right, which is the hardest thing in football, it’s really encouraging,’ added the GFC boss who now prepares his side for an away trip to Three Bridges next weekend.
