However, as always, he would have loved to be on the top step of the podium rather than third and knows that but for some bad luck with a full course yellow they could have won the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Although he was a little bit disappointed, the Sarnian was also looking at the positives from the weekend. ‘It was a really good race for me personally. I had a great first two stints and took the lead.

‘We had a nice cushion there, but it is a long race and we had a safety car and full course yellow, which really hurt us at the wrong time and we went slightly out of sequence. The call to pit was the right call at the time, but it put us slightly back.

‘I am a bit disappointed we didn’t get the win that we deserved, but that is motor racing.

‘The car was great, and it suits my driving style, so I have always been able to get the best out of the car and myself.’
