Amy smashes PB to hold off Frenchman
PETER AMY sliced nearly a quarter of an hour off his best for an outstanding home victory in the Guernsey Waterfront Marathon.
Five years ago, Amy placed fourth in a shade under three hours in a race where two visiting Kenyan athletes reigned supreme.
But the in-form Sarnian returned on a blustery Sunday to run a huge PB of 2hrs. 42min. 27sec. and take top honours in only his second ever marathon, defying any surprises that the largely international field had to offer.
‘It’s amazing, amazing. I’m absolutely stoked,’ he said.
‘The big thing today was to go sub 2-50 and that meant taking six and a half minutes off my PB, so to get a 14min. PB I’m literally over the moon.’
Amy’s win didn’t come easily, as he was held to the stride by Frenchman Guillaume Chevreau right up to the closing mile.
Chevreau took second place half a minute in arrears and Welshman Alistair Downes completed the marathon podium another three minutes back.
Ulrike Maisch still had the remnants of last month’s Ironman triathlon debut in her legs, but the top veteran made no excuses and finished in 3-03.14 to win the women’s race with over 20 minutes on Wales’ Rebecca Carver.
