Rangers to take on ‘Tigers’ in 125th anniversary reunion
GUERNSEY’S oldest football club have pulled off a small coup as they celebrate their 125th anniversary season.
On the day they lost 5-1 to St Martin’s in the first round of the Jeremie Cup which they won for the first time a mere 116 years ago, Rangers confirmed that they are to replicate their very first competitive game, which was against the army.
On Sunday 21 October they will play The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, also known as the Tigers.
The match will be played on grass at KGV or, in the event of bad weather, on the all-weather 3G pitch.
‘It all began with a match on 5 October 1893, against the 5th Battalion of the Royal Fuselliers, who were based at Fort George,’ said Rangers stalwart Lorraine Ellis.
‘The army won that inaugural game 4-1 and in that first season of the Priaulx League Rangers raised two teams, the army four.
‘We have a full programme for the army on the Saturday and Sunday and intend to make sure they enjoy a great weekend,’ said Ellis.
Rangers open their 125th anniversary celebrations with a trip to Alderney on 8 September when their Priaulx League game will double as the Baker Cup match.
‘This competition was played between the two clubs for many years, always in Alderney, so on the 8th whoever wins the Priaulx game will also be presented with the Baker Cup,’ added Ellis.
‘[Then] on 13 October we will be holding our celebration dinner for all club members, with entertainment from local and UK entertainers.'
In last night's game Saints progressed with two goals from Connor Tostevin and one apiece from Ally Venosa and Danny Hale. At Northfield, North KOd Sylvans 2-0 in the same competition.
