The long wait for a win at L’Ancresse is finally over

GUERNSEY’S 20-year wait for a Seniors Inter-Insular victory at L’Ancresse could hardly have been ended in a more comprehensive fashion yesterday.

In fact, much of the damage was done on Saturday afternoon when, aptly for the men in the pristine white polo shirts, they whitewashed the holders Jersey 5-0 in the fourballs.

It would have taken something out of the ordinary to have lost from that position the following morning and the home side were in no mood to allow that to happen and instead they carried forward their momentum to wrap up a remarkable 13-2 triumph.

The Sarnians had last won the annual over-55s clash in 2014 at La Grande Mare, but you have to go back to last century for their previous victory at L’Ancresse, which made this rout all the more satisfying for new team captain Dave Jeffery.

‘It’s the first time since 1998 that we’ve won at L’Ancresse, so on the 20th anniversary we have won it back,’ he said.

‘Only three wins [for Guernsey] since 1996 I think, but we’re only going to get stronger over the next few years so hopefully we can go over there next year and retain the trophy.’
