'Beckhamesque' goal teen's telling response
AFTER Charlton Gauvain’s ‘Beckhamesque’ wonder goal against Ramsgate, Tony Vance revealed he had given the exciting 17-year-old a proverbial kick up the rear.
Like everyone in the Footes Lane crowd, Vance was stunned by the youngster’s Premiership-standard goal which, to all intents and purposes, clinched a vital three points that lifted the Green Lions to ninth in the table.
‘I have fired a couple of challenges at him this season because I thought he was poor last [campaign], but the last three games he has been outstanding and playing like a man.
‘Charlton should be playing at a better level. Credit to him.’
Vance, whose side now have a two-week break before travelling to Greenwich Borough on Saturday week, said his side deserved a bit of luck in the 2-1 win over Ramsgate.
‘We were hanging on a bit.
‘Obviously they are a good side but we really dug in although a draw will probably have been fair, let’s be honest.’
The GFC coach has introduced a new tactical element to go with some new faces this season and, so far, but for a bad 45 minutes against Ashford United, it’s worked.
‘The players are taking on board what Steve’s doing on the coaching ground and what we’re doing with the video analysis and information we’re giving the players and they are responding.
‘We are punching above our weight in this league and the fact that they are doing three sessions a week is getting us some rewards.
‘That was a decent three points against a team that will get a lot of results.’
Vance added:
‘The key is having these young dynamic players in the right positions because you can counter very quickly.
‘When you’ve got someone like Callum [Stanton] who can just deliver the ball so well. He was superb.
‘I thought the first 15-20 minutes we were electric.’
Ramsgate had come into this match on a high after back to back wins and must have expected to get something out of this game having only lost once in 10 previous meetings with Guernsey whose next opponents languish near the bottom of the table after picking up just three points from their first four games.
