GUERNSEY’S Ryan Burling lined up among the elite at the Great North Run and marked the occasion with a huge top-20 finish.

Burling relished starring in a stacked field alongside famed compatriot Sir Mo Farah, who claimed his fifth consecutive victory, and Burling’s 68min. 29sec. for 18th was certainly a commendable effort.

This performance was even more notable given that Burling had mere weeks to prepare for the world-class half-marathon following a prolonged injury.

‘Overall I’m really happy with my run; I aimed to just go out and enjoy the experience,’ said Burling.

‘With the little training I’ve done in recent weeks, I’d not set a target on a time, but thought anything sub-69 minutes would be a very good run.’
