Vance hails ‘the best side we have played’

TONY VANCE reported that it was ‘a bad time’ to face Greenwich Borough as his Green Lions fell to a 4-0 away defeat on Saturday.

Although it was only the home side’s second victory of the Bostik South-East campaign and lifted them above Guernsey FC in the table, the GFC manager called the opposition ‘the best side we have played’ this season.

‘Apparently they are a completely different side from four or five weeks ago and nowhere near [what] their lowly position [suggests] – without a doubt that’s a false marker,’ Vance said.

‘We competed as best we could, there were moments in the game where I thought we were very good and we had them rattled, but they are a very athletic team full of top academy players.

‘If we had played them four or five weeks ago, I think it would have been a different story but, because obviously it was a completely different side, they will beat a lot of sides if they retain all of those players from the academies.’

Greenwich Borough led 1-0 at half-time through Teshuane Tyreece Walters’ goal and, after withstanding GFC’s best spell at the start of the second half, a hat-trick from Reece Deakin in the last 20 minutes wrapped up the three points.

‘At 1-0 we had them rattled, had a great chance, didn’t take it, had a penalty [shout] which I felt should have been given, Paris got elbowed in the face and how the ref didn’t see it…it was a clear red card.

‘But from then on, they got their second goal and the third and fourth finished us off.’
