Forwards showing the way

FORWARD thinking is the way to go for Raiders, according to their coach.

A third straight defeat – this time a 70-26 loss at Bury St Edmunds – to start life in National Two South has left injury-ravaged Guernsey one off the bottom of the table at this early stage of the season, but Jordan Reynolds is taking solace from the performances of his pack.

‘We have played three out of the top five sides so far and a big plus is that our forwards have been dominant,’ he said.

‘If we can stick to a game plan based around that and then be more competitive in other areas, we might start sneaking some wins.’

Raiders conceded a dozen tries on the road at the weekend, but scored four of their own thanks to the pack to pick up a useful bonus point.

Tom Ceillam touched down twice and there was a try apiece for Nick Merrien and the coach’s man-of-the-match Charlie Currie.

‘Defensively we were nowhere near close to where we needed to be. I don’t think BSE had to build for any of their tries, we just let them walk through,’ said Reynolds.

‘But at the end of the day, we are playing people out of position and it’s not ideal. We are trying to put Band-Aids over massive wounds.'
