IT TOOK them until the 92nd minute, but St Martin’s finally saw off Bels 4-2 last night to close to within three points of Rovers at the top of the FNB Priaulx League with a game in hand on the champions.

A week after they had to pull out of a fixture due to a lack of players, Bels were able to field an XI including the likes of quality trio Ryan-Zico Black, Ant Austen and Billy Page, who all played a part in making it a highly-competitive and often entertaining game at Blanche Pierre Lane.

A flurry of four goals in five minutes lit up the first half with Steve Renouf giving the hosts the lead on 33min. with a well-taken goal set up by Gregor Wilson, but within a minute Bels were back on level terms thanks to Callum Wallace.

The visitors gifted Saints the advantage again two minutes later, with Wilson setting up Danny Hale to dink home a nice finish, but the Bels response was immediate once more with Jason Martin unable to keep out Sam McKenzie’s deflected shot.

Just 90sec. into the second half, Hale scored from a 25-yard free kick to edge Saints ahead for the third time and this time they managed to keep their lead intact, although both sides created further good chances with both goalkeepers making notable saves.

In injury time, though, Dom Heaume was brought down in the Bels penalty area and substitute Brent Marquand calmly tucked away the resultant spot kick.
