The 21-year-old Laser Radial star is currently based in Portland and eagerly following a testing six-week trial programme tailored to British Sailing’s P3 ranks.

She continues to compete regularly and to good effect, recently showing this at the first round of qualifiers in South Shields.

Thompson was pleased to finish second woman and sixth overall out of 62 after performing consistently despite challenging conditions.

She hopes to follow up with a good performance at the easterly town of Lowestoft this weekend.

‘I’m really excited for the next qualifier, there is already a large entry and the quality of the fleet is going to be really high,’ she said.

‘Mostly I’m eager to race against the top sailors in the UK and perform at my best.

‘I’ve never raced in Lowestoft before, so it will be an interesting event and I’ll learn lots.’

To make the cut for the upcoming championships, Thompson needs to push her case in both this and her final qualifier in Weymouth the following weekend.

She is currently seeded No. 4 Brit and remaining in the top six after qualification will pave her way to next May’s European Championships in Portugal and the following World Championships in Japan.
