McKane’s spot kick completes turnaround

A YEAR after they surrendered a two-goal Jeremie Cup lead against the same opposition, Rovers hit back from an early two-goal deficit to take their place in the semi-finals of the old inter-island competition which they have yet to win.

A Tyler McKane penalty 12 minutes from the end of normal time settled matters in favour of the Guernsey champions, who displayed great character to hit back and avenge not only last season’s loss but also a heavy Wheway Cup defeat at the hands of Gary Freeman’s side only a few weeks back.

Even more impressively it arrived after the worst possible start for the home side with Daryl Wilson opening the scoring for the visitors on just 21sec. before Luke Campbell doubled their lead.

Chezney Payne quickly halved the deficit and the equaliser came on the hour mark through Tom Strawbridge before McKane kept his cool from 12 yards to score the winner.

The other scheduled Jeremie Cup quarter-final between St Martin’s and St Clement was postponed due to the ferry cancellation on Saturday.
