Chalmers on track for Tokyo
OLYMPIC hopeful Cam Chalmers can enjoy another year on British Athletics’ World Class Programme.
He has been named on the WCP roster for the second year running alongside the likes of Olympic podium prospects Mo Farah and Dina Asher-Smith, although Guernsey’s 400m star instead finds his place on the Olympic Relays programme.
Chalmers will receive a sizeable portion of annual National Lottery funding aimed at boosting GB’s relay medal chances in Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
The 21-year-old can now continue to vie for team places with European silver and world bronze winning 4x400m men Matthew Hudson-Smith, Rabah Yousif, Martyn Rooney and Dwayne Cowan, who are also listed.
Although branded with an Olympic focus, the WCP’s funding is a huge boon for any athlete and can also help with intermediate goals such as the Doha 2019 World Championships.
‘It’s another tick in the box,’ said Guernsey Athletics development officer Tom Druce.
‘Everybody who has come from Guernsey knows how important it is to not be in full-time work while trying to be a professional athlete and that funding can make all the difference.’
