Desperques’ double ton show for Dad
THREE tons in a week, two of them against the 10min. clock on the way to defending his Snooker Shootout title, will live long in the memory of those at the Gremlin Club to see Martyn Desperques do it.
The Island champion produced a display that can only be described as sublime and ridiculous, one made all the more impressive as it came just two days after the death of his father, Martyn Snr., after a long illness.
Five times Island champion Adam Shorto said it was ‘incredible... a phenomenal achievement’, adding: ‘he was just so determined to win it and put on a show for his Dad.’
In becoming the champion of the 10-minute-per-frame shootout event yet again, Desperques was simply brilliant in hitting two century breaks on the way to a final success against the relatively unknown surprise package, Ben Smith.
Desperques had already made a 53 to defeat Annie Wilkins in the first round when he struck his first ton against Connor Granville. A clearance of 103 was the first century break ever seen in the Shootout, but Desperques soon surpassed it with another clearance – this time a magnificent 108 to end Steve Le Poidevin’s great run to the semi-finals.
