Coach wishes for a Christmas miracle

RAIDERS could do with ‘Santa Claus bringing us a miracle’ joked their coach yesterday as he gave a halfway assessment of their inaugural National Two South season.

Guernsey remain 14th in the 16-team table after Saturday’s 60-14 defeat at Taunton Titans left them with only two wins from 15 games to their name so far in their injury-blighted campaign – and Jordan Reynolds yesterday emphasised that the Christmas break is just one weekend after their trip to Worthing this Saturday, giving them little respite or the opportunity to get injured players back to fitness.

‘People keep telling me that we will be getting people back after Christmas, but I just don’t know when they [the injuries] are going to clear up,’ he said.

‘They could continue through January and into February and we don’t have a huge amount of time off over Christmas – the break will only allow us to put our heads down for five minutes before we are back to it again.

‘Our ambition would have been to be sitting around mid-table, maybe just below, by this stage of the season with half the required wins [to stay up] had we had a full squad.

‘It’s going to be a tough slog for the rest of the season. We know we have to start winning games, but it is a difficult situation we are in at the moment.

‘I think we probably deserve some good fortune coming our way in the new year.

‘It’s not going to get any easier, but there’s still half the season to go and anything can happen.’
