Five-time winner Shorto eases into second round

ADAM SHORTO took less than half an hour to progress through to the next round of the Island Snooker Championship, as all but one of the first-round matches were completed.

The five-time champion was simply too strong for Tim Fallaize in restricting him to just five points in three frames, with Shorto making breaks of 42 and 83.

There was even time for disappointment for Shorto as the possibility of a 141 break loomed, but he missed a tricky cut on the black with three reds left in the second frame.

Shorto will next play Clayton Le Noury, who also won 3-0 in beating Ross De Carteret, but the one other first-round match went the full distance.

Dave Gilmour twice saw team mate Ryan Le Page come back from a single-frame deficit, but easily won the last 70-13 to set up a match against Dave Bullock.

In the second round, a brilliant personal competitive best break of 80 by Darren Hughes saw the number five seed ease his way past Dave Shute into the quarter-final, while Adrian Holley was also a comfortable 3-0 winner with a more modest 33 against Colin Gilbert.

The Ladies’ Island Snooker Championship starts at the quarter-final stage and there were 2-0 victories in the two matches played.

Anne Le Maitre boasts the most experience of the eight competitors as she saw off debutante Jamie Le Poidevin, while Danielle Leadbeater overcame Annie Wilkins.
