Thomson steps down at Rangers

NATHAN THOMSON has stepped down as Rangers first-team coach to concentrate on playing for the club.

Club stalwart Darren Ogier, who was in the dugout for the Red-and-Blacks at the KGV in their 2-2 draw with Sylvans last weekend in a match where Thomson came on as a second-half substitute, has taken over the reins for the rest of the season, with Rangers president Guy Hardill confirming the change in a statement yesterday.

‘He felt the team has been taken as far as it can be and he wants to refocus on playing for Rangers again and press for a Priaulx place,’ said Hardill of Thomson, who had been first-team coach since June 2017.

‘We confirm that Darren Ogier has taken charge certainly for the remainder of this season, and he will be assisted by team captain Shane Billien and Matt Solway, both of whom have many years of Rangers playing experience.

‘Nathan will, of course, assist Darren with a handover of the reins.’

Ogier has held the position as Rangers first-team coach previously.

He has been with the club since 1984 and is a club committee member.

‘He provides continuity for the players,’ said Hardill.

‘Darren has also been running our youth teams for 10 years now and he will also be looking to ensure there is a defined pathway for these players to develop from youth to senior football and follow the likes of Charlton Gauvain, Miles Hardill, Dan Lilley and Jarod Carrington, to name a few.

‘Andy Simon will also work with Darren to assist in the area of youth development pathway as Andy has extensive experience in this field and is well known locally for his coaching prowess.

‘We believe this coaching team will provide stability and assurance across the club as we look build from our successful 125-year celebrations.

‘As a club we are delighted with how Nathan has developed this team during his tenure and now welcome Darren and his team to the role.’
