London Welsh, boosted by vocal support in the Garenne Stand, were intent on doing the double over their hosts having been one of only two sides to beat Steve Evans’ side this season and they got off to the ideal start with two deserved tries in the opening half-hour.

But once Guernsey, who had looked apprehensive in those opening exchanges, were given a spark by an outstanding individual try out of nothing from young scrum-half Lucy Pratt, they gave as good as they got and the two sides ended up inseparable in an entertaining see-saw battle that ended 15-15. Laura Sweeney and Carly Duchemin scored the other Guernsey tries.

‘It was a really good performance,’ said GLR coach Evans afterwards.

‘It was a tight game, second and third in the league, and there’s just that bonus point between us and today you could see that the teams are well matched.

‘We would have been really disappointed to lose and I think London Welsh would have been in the same boat so I think a draw, as disappointing as it is not to win, is a fair result.’
