Unlikely hero Dodds does the trick – twice

THOMAS DODDS was the unlikely hero with two goals from left-back to earn the Green Lions three hard-earned points at Haywards Heath Town to make it five away games without defeat.

In truth, it was a backs-to-the-wall effort by the visitors who climb to 13th place in the table after their 2-1 win.

Will Fazakerley thought he had scored inside four minutes, only to be denied by the offside flag, but thereafter it was one-way traffic for the team sitting sixth in the table.

Time and again Cal Stanton was called into action and the home team were punished for not taking their chances with four minutes of the start of the second half.

Carlos Canha had just failed to turn in at the near post as he met Seb Skillen’s cutback from Fazakerley’s deep cross and the resulting corner saw Matt Loaring swing a leg and divert the ball towards goal where Dodds was on hand to poke the ball over the line.

The Sarnians had started the second half far better than they were thankful for Connor Saunders’ poor finishing on two occasions before Dodds struck again.

Dave Rihoy, filling in at right-back due to an injury in the warm-up to Tom De La Mare, collected the ball off Canha and drove across the area. His initial shot was blocked but Dodds reacted quickest to the rebound, taking a touch before lashing the ball into the left corner of the net from just outside the box.

Saunders finally found the back of the net from the spot after Tobin was alleged to have handled a cross but the Green Lions just about held out to claim three vital points.
