‘Unshakeable’ Cam

CAM CHALMERS’ ‘unshakeable belief in himself’ was key to his British 400m title glory.

That’s the view of Tom Druce, the man Chalmers has surpassed as Guernsey’s finest ever quarter-miler.

Now Guernsey Athletics’ development officer, Druce described Chalmers’ gold-medal winning run as ‘perfect technical race execution in terms of an indoor 400’.

‘He’s clearly progressed physically from last year and it bodes well not only for the rest of the indoors but for the summer too. I think his attitude is key ... single minded running for the win, unshakeable belief in himself,’ Druce added.

The memory of Chalmers winning his first fully senior British title at Arena Birmingham will live on in the eyes of many fortunate onlookers.

But a milestone win and outstanding 46.26sec. time have paved the way to even headier heights for the 22-year-old Guernseyman, who has qualified for next month’s European Championships and can now build even further from what is arguably his greatest performance to date.

‘The win just reassures all the hard training I’ve done,’ he said afterwards.

‘One of my old coaches said to just be standing on the start line trusting all the hard training you’ve done, all the hard work you’ve put in, and it’s going to carry you through.

‘I got out really hard and trusted that I would just about hang on.’
