Wasteful Lions fail to take chances to climb the table
THE carrot for victory and achieving the double over Sevenoaks Town was not insignificant – three Bostik South East League placings and, with it, surely an end to any fears of finishing in the bottom two and possible relegation.
The mandarins in the Isthmian set-up have, apparently, yet to decide whether a second side drops out of the division as well as the now defunct Thamesmead Town, but it would be nice to think that GFC will leave nothing to chance on that front and starting to win regularly at home would take care of that.
But here was a great chance of starting just that, wasted as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.
If the resting of Charlton Gauvain was not unfortunate and handicapping enough, there was a further blow for the Green Lions before kick off with news that skipper Jamie Dodd was unwell and not fit for action, which was to the benefit of a recalled Simon Geall, who also took the skipper’s armband.
They deservedly led 1-0 at half-time, though, through Dave Rihoy's strike but in the second half substitute Ainsley Everett equalised and then, after Frank Tobin saw a straight red for hauling down Sawyer on the edge of the box, from the free-kick Everett curled a beauty into the far corner.
