THE joy of a home European Indoor Championships has just reached a new level for Cam Chalmers.

Following his recent British 400m title triumph, Chalmers has earned his first individual senior vest for Great Britain and is set to head the home challenge in his event at Glasgow 2019.

This doubles up with yet another senior 4x400m appearance, where he starts as top pick alongside recent Birmingham podium-makers Owen Smith and Alex Haydock-Wilson, together with Joe Brier and a wild-card in former sprint prodigy Thomas Somers.

British Athletics performance director Neil Black hails the 48-athlete roster as the country’s strongest ever.

‘We are delighted to have selected our biggest and strongest ever team for the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow, which is yet another major international championships for us on home soil,’ said Black.

Chalmers’ previous GB senior outings have been confined to relays and so the championships, running 1-3 March, will be an amazing opportunity for Guernsey’s elite quarter-miler.

His brother, Ala, was not quite so fortunate this weekend after falling short of making the British Universities Championships indoor final over 400m.

The hurdles ace could not quite follow in the footsteps of five-time BUCS champion Cam, cruising to a heat win but missing out after clocking 48.70sec. in a hugely competitive semi-final.

Fellow Bath student Richard Bartram was arguably the star performer of the BUCS event from a Sarnian point of view and while the final was likely never in reach, he did manage to knock down his indoor best twice over the 1500m distance.

Bartram hit a quick 4-00.37 in his semi just hours after a hard-run heat. Manchester’s Katie Rowe posted a 2-21.88 finish over 800m.
