Saints the ‘carpetbaggers’

THEY are looking ominously good for a first FNB Priaulx League title in eight years, but St Martin’s know they have a few more major hurdles to clear, starting with a home game against the faltering defending champions tonight.

Dom Heaume returns to a full strength Saints squad for a game which, should Leon Meakin’s side win, would take them 12 clear of Rovers and leave just Alderney as their only serious concern in the title chase.

Home advantage is one thing, but given their brilliance on the 3G carpet recently Meakin was yesterday questioning where their best prospects lie. Southern grass or the artificial?

There was a time St Martin’s struggled badly inside the KGV cage, but at the start of this calendar year they have been rampant on it, winning four out of four in the Stranger Cup and thumping Rangers 9-0 in the league last weekend.

All told, they have netted 35 goals in five games on the KGV 3G this past six weeks, conceding just one.

‘We seem to have figured how to play on the 3G this season,’ said Meakin, adding, ‘perhaps we should play the game there as we always seem to play well.’

Meakin says he is not paying much attention to the standings and how tonight’s game affects Rovers and Alderney.

‘We are only concentrating on ourselves. We are simply focusing on getting another three points.’

Kick off is at 7.30pm.
