Puffins crowned champions
CAPTAIN Kelley Cameron led by example as she scored a hat-trick on the day Puffins sealed the Alliance Women’s League title.
Up against the only team to have taken points off them so far this season in Panthers, who had held them to a 1-1 draw earlier this month, Cameron admitted her side were ‘very nervous’ in the build-up to Sunday’s encounter, but a positive team-talk and warm-up ahead of the game got them off on the right foot.
‘We aimed to be strong from the start, quick in both 25s and 2v1s around Lucy Slimm in the Panthers defence,’ said the Puffins captain.
‘We came away with a 7-0 win and I am extremely pleased with the result.’
Liza Sayer (two), Lucy Waldrom and Laura Webber scored the other goals.
It is Puffins’ first title in many years and, having done it under their new official title of Colombians-Puffins as part of their collaboration with the Men’s Division One champions, it completes a domestic league double for the yellows.
Now the focus switches to trying to beat the Jersey champions in the ‘Upton’.
‘Their league is very close this year and at this time we are unsure who our opposition may be,’ said Cameron.
‘It is an away game but our collaboration with Colombians will give us some supporters in Jersey as we are hoping to schedule both the men’s and women’s games for the same day.’
