Cam finds it tough

CAM CHALMERS’ European Indoor Championships individual campaign ended in the semi-finals after falling victim to the challenges of indoor 400m racing.

The Guernseyman finished sixth and last in a tough race from lane one in 47.83sec.

He had earlier finished third in his heat, relinquishing his lead with 30m to go after a bold front-run, and was determined to overcome the unfavourable lane draw with a more controlled pacing strategy.

After lapping at the back of a string featuring eventual gold-medallist Karsten Warholm, Chalmers tried to shift gears but failed to make headway.

Testifying to the difference between indoor and outdoor 400s, he said: ‘As soon as we’re into the second lap, we’re all just in a big line of six, and outdoors that would never happen.

‘So then you’ve got to try and go round people, and people start moving out, and it just chops your rhythm – it is a completely different event, I’d say.’
