Many took to social media on Friday evening in tribute to the Salemites stalwart and all-rounder, who played in a record-equalling 23 inter-insulars.

Former GCB president David Piesing said: ‘Have just heard the very sad news that Ralph Anthony has passed away. One of Guernsey cricket’s true greats over many decades as well as starring in both football and bowls. A legend of local sport.’

Former Jersey and Guernsey captain Ward Jenner Tweeted: ‘Too young. I have the loveliest letter from Ralph who didn’t back me as Gsy captain but totally supported my efforts in the role. It is a prized possession. A true gent. Very sad.’

Fellow Guernsey spin bowler Gary Rich added: ‘Very sad news hearing the passing away of Ralph Anthony, a true Guernsey Cricket legend, he helped me out so much in the early part of my cricketing career. He always played the game with passion and intensity and just loved beating Jersey.’
