Panthers let 10-goal half-time lead slip

‘FRUSTRATING’ was Saffery Panthers captain Nena Copperwaite’s word of choice after Sussex Lightning struck her side down 45-44.

The travelling Sarnians had built a convincing 27-17 lead in the first half of their final away game of the season, but it took just one brief lapse in the following minutes to deny them the much-needed points and keep them sitting fourth in South Division Three.

‘To sum the match up in a word, I’d have to say “frustrating”,’ Copperwaite said.

‘We played some excellent netball but just cannot afford to throw away a 10-goal lead. We need to be more clinical.’

Panthers nominated the opposition GA for player of the match, while Zola Saunders was a worthy recipient of the equivalent honours.

‘Once again our defence were brilliant, turning over numerous balls – a well deserved player-of-the-match nomination this week,’ added Copperwaite.

A strong home concluder on 17 March is essential if Panthers wish to take third in the division over Weston Park Blades Two, who also lost last weekend but maintain their lead on goal ratio.
