Gauvain delivers a master class
GUERNSEY weathered an early storm to reclaim the silverware in the U18 Muratti at Springfield Stadium yesterday afternoon, ending a sorry run of defeats at the ground in the process.
Under the cosh in the opening 20 minutes as Jersey pressed forward but missed opportunities – including a penalty kick – the Sarnians went on to win comfortably 4-1 with a hat-trick by Charlton Gauvain and Callum Le Lacheur’s single.
Jersey captain Sol Solomon saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Chris Mahy, before Solomon scored late in the first half, to level the scores at 1-1.
'We’ve only got ourselves to blame,’ said Jersey manager Paul Renton.
‘We had lots of the ball but we didn’t really look like scoring and we’ve defended poorly.'
Guernsey boss Colin Fallaize said: ‘I’m delighted, football is crazy at times and there were moments in there when it was crazy.
‘Jersey had lots of chances but our young boys followed their instructions to keep in the game and they did that well.
‘Defending is a bit about luck as well and they showed bravery and the willingness to work, but not in the most attacking way because Jersey had most of the attacking flair, but they didn’t have the final product.
‘Working hard is the simplicity of football, there are simple things that make football what it is and it is not always the glamorous things that get you the results.
‘I think today, the youngsters there did the dirty stuff really well and they were rewarded.’
