Alderney take top spot while GFC fight back to earn point

ALDERNEY as FNB Priaulx League champions. Well, we might start believing it will happen after the boys in blue went three points clear at the top on Saturday with a 3-1 win over North at Mount Hale.

Inspired by an early Jermaine Parry goal, Alderney extended their lead through Marian State just after half-time and Dante Walker made the game safe with a third.

Back in the summer the prospect of Alderney winning the Priaulx was as unthinkable as Guernsey FC being relegated from Bostik SE League, and the chances of the Green Lions going down remain too big for comfort despite a battling 2-2 draw at Herne Bay.

In the circumstances of a frustrating road journey, which saw GFC arrive at the ground after the scheduled 1pm kick off time and have just 15 minutes to warm up, it was a good point made better by news of Greenwich Borough going down at home to Horsham and slipping three points adrift of Tony Vance’s men.

The draw looked distinctly unlikely as GFC fell two goals behind in 22 minutes.

But by half-time they were level, Frank Tobin getting the first on his 50th appearance for the club and then Liam Mahon levelling at the end of a fine move.

The Green Lions finished strongly and looked the more likely winners, but the point will be well received given their recent form.

Back in Guernsey, Jersey came from behind to win another Star Trophy, this time 3-1, and in the Priaulx game at St Peter’s, Sylvans keeper Chris Mahy saved his second penalty in a week.

But despite the Island U18s keeper’s heroics, his Sylvans side were beaten 3-0 by Rangers.

Wayne Bishop got his second brace of the week and young Brad Foss also netted for the red-and-blacks.
