ST MARTIN’S survived a nervy last five minutes to beat Vale Rec 3-2 last night at Blanche Pierre Lane and regain top spot in the FNB Priaulx League on goal difference from Alderney with both sides having now played 19 games.

Saints had seemingly been cruising to victory at three goals to the good with less than 20 minutes to go, but Danny Ozanne gave Vale Rec renewed hope by smashing the ball home from close range after Sam Le Huray’s free-kick into the box had been nodded down into his path.

Then, with three minutes of the 90 remaining, Saints failed to deal with an inswinging corner and substitute Craig Tyrell turned the ball in to set up a thrilling – and, for the home side, tense – finale.

Earlier, with Rec employing three centre-backs, the visitors had proved hard to break down in the first half until Chris Le Noury nodded home Brent Marquand’s cross on 39min. and the Saints captain scored again two minutes later, forcing the ball home at a corner.

Louis Hunter’s brave diving header from Charlie Le Prevost’s cross on 70min. then proved to be the decisive goal.
