However, for both Nico Robinson and Pete Beausire, heading to an Island Games will not come as a new experience as they have previously competed for Team Guernsey at tennis and volleyball respectively.

In naming his 12-strong squad, coach Adam Farish paid tribute to the work the pair have put into improving their games in recent times.

‘It’s great to give debuts to both Nico and Pete,’ Farish said.

‘Nico has stepped up to Division One basketball in the last couple of years and he is a mountain of a lad.

‘Towards the end of last season he started to realise his own potential, how big and strong he is, and after winning the league with Skipton last year, he has stepped up to play a starring role for Giants this season.

‘This is a first inter-insular for Pete, although he did win a few National League caps in the past. He was unlucky to miss out in the last couple of years, but this year he has been superb both in games and in training and his fast-break ability will be a real asset for us.’

Guernsey men’s squad: Aaron Walden (captain), Jason Hooper, Martin Yabsley, Dan Marriott, Max Hamon, Agris Dulbinskis, Paul Van Beek, Matt Sawbridge, Nico Robinson, Pete Beausire, Andrejs Vaganovs, Mike Beausire. Coach: Adam Farish. Assistant: Dave Wilson.
