Yesterday’s 2-1 loss at home to a classy Horsham outfit leaves Tony Vance’s men bottom and trailing Greenwich Borough by a point and attention now switches to Saturday’s last-day showdowns at Sittingbourne and Greenwich.

But it looks increasingly likely that, with Greenwich destined to be docked three points for fielding an ineligible player, a draw will be enough against Sittingbourne and GFC fans will have noted that Greenwich’s last-day opposition – Hastings United – will be very hard to beat.

But, for now, that is all by-the-by with GFC, on a run of 14 games without a win, desperate for a saviour, in whatever disguise that is.

Although it took Horsham 77 minutes to put the game to bed, GFC never looked remotely likely to spring a shock here.

‘They were very good, they have strengthened a lot since New Year’s Day and the first half was probably men against boys,’ said Vance in the bowels of the Garenne Stand later.

‘You can see the level they are at and why they are second.’

Vance, who also admitted he has known about Greenwich’s likely points penalty for six weeks, said he had been disappointed that his team had gifted Horsham two goals.
