A second-half comeback, having trailed hosts Sittingbourne 2-0 at half-time, to earn a 2-2 draw ensured Guernsey FC stayed up on merit on the final day of the Bostik South East league, not having to rely on the three-point deduction imposed on Greenwich Borough who are relegated after a 3-1 defeat to Hastings United.

The GFC goals came from super-subs Kieran Mahon and Paris Pereira, with the equaliser arriving in the 89th minute.

‘We have had a lot of that this season where we have been a 45-minute team and it was a game of two halves on this pitch, the wind and conditions really dictated that,’ said captain Jamie Dodd to GFC TV.

‘We were under the cosh and we didn’t help ourselves first half with the way we played, but the spirit to come out in the second half and the pressure we put on them was relentless.

‘I think that shows what we have got as a group … we are so tight knit, you won’t get much spirit that will outlast that, so to get the 2-2 was fantastic.’
