Saints crowned champions
IT’S been a while – eight years – since the FNB Priaulx League Trophy has worn black and white ribbons, but they are back on.
Nobody should complain, because the league table doesn’t lie, St Martin's are the best team on island. Good on them, take a bow coach ‘Meaky’ and the most progressive club in the division.
They’ve done it as a squad, not on the back of brilliance of one or two and that, in itself, is a triumph.
But in 2019 there are no heroes here unless one appears to sink St Paul’s in the Upton next week.
Of course, hero worship at Blanche Pierre Lane was always going to be hard to find in the post Renouf-Loveridge-Brazier era, and un-befitting of Saints’ crowning day the only heroes on view at a decidedly breezy ‘BPL’ on Saturday afternoon, were the ones dressed in all blue, or in particular the one wearing 4 on his back.
That is not to take anything away from the Saints squad, clearly the most talented when the depth question is brought in.
Leon Meakin and Tam Muir, the big man from Edinburgh brought in to add some non-blinkered eyes and steel to what was a flaky group, have kept the biggest ship in the Priaulx surging on, avoiding choppy seas of player discontent, and kept the group spirit together. They had eight subs on the bench on Saturday and rumour is that they have plans in for a bigger home dressing room.
Given how many players they have at their disposal, keeping harmony is some effort on Meakin’s part.
They completed their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to runners-up Alderney. Steve Renouf gave them the lead before Ross Benfield equalised in the second half.
