Will the Greens be playing in white in the Muratti?
GUERNSEY may very well play in their lucky white in next week’s Muratti Vase final.
The Sarnians have already won the U18s and U21s age-group Murattis in the specially-designed GFA 125 all-white kit with green flashes, and they may yet attempt a hat-trick on Saturday week.
The Guernsey FA have yet to comment on the issue, but it seems quite likely that for the first in living memory, the Sarnians won’t run out in green or predominantly green shirts.
Not that the colour of the kit is a concern for Chris Tardif, who saw his squad dispense with the visiting Upton Park FC side 4-0 in their final warm-up game on Saturday.
Tardif was delighted with the performance and although he smiled when the question of a three-man defence was brought up, it would now seem very likely that he will start with the all-GFC Frank Tobin-Jamie Dodd-Thomas Dodds combination against Jersey.
‘We played three at the back today, so we’ll see,’ said Tardif, whose biggest decision now may well be who to play in goal – Josh Addison or Jason Martin.
‘It worked out exactly as we wanted it to do in terms of what we wanted to achieve from the game,’ said the Guernsey manager.
‘The result was good but it was more than just the result, it was about working on a couple of different positions and working on scenarios within the game.
‘The best and most pleasing things for us as coaches was the actual players took every bit of information on board and played as we asked them to play.
‘Obviously in two weeks’ time there is going to be more pressure, but if the guys play with that freedom and that expression, I think we’ve got every opportunity to win.’
It is understood that the GFA Board have yet to make a final decision on what strip to wear but Tardif understands the decision has already been made and the side will wear the 125 strip.
‘The players really like it,’ he said.
‘I’ don’t care, as long as we win,’ added a man who also revealed that as he is colour blind, green and red shirts were always the worst for him to sight as a goalkeeper, and that white will do fine for him.
‘On a purely selfish point of view I’m pleased as the Muratti was always difficult for me.
‘I understand people are going to be calling to follow history and play in green, but the response [to white] from the players has been great.’
