Victorious Griffins denied place in final by Moherndl

GRIFFINS won the battle but lost the war.

Although under-strength once again and defending only a modest 148, Griffins came remarkably close to skittling out Cobo for a low enough score to finish above them in the round-robin on net run-rate with each of the three sides in the competition having won one and lost one.

However, on a day when he made a mockery of the rest of the batting efforts on both sides, Kris Moherndl made an outstanding 86 not out to ensure Cobo crept into this coming Sunday’s final against Wanderers Irregulars.

The next highest score on the day was Nic Buckle’s quick cameo of 26 towards the end of the Griffins innings – a knock that proved to be game-changing in the scheme of things – but no-one came close to Moherndl for both application and execution.

He alone was the reason Griffins finished bottom of the pile.

They deserve plenty of credit for their attempt to dismiss Cobo for somewhere near 80, which they needed to do to overtake them in the table.

Each of their bowlers gave it their all, reducing their opponents to 62 for 6 at one stage, before Moherndl took it upon himself to get his side within 13 runs before they eventually succumbed to a game-ending run out that occurred as their star man attempted to keep the strike.

By then, Cobo knew they had booked their place in the showpiece while Griffins were resigned to their fate of missing out.
