‘I didn’t enjoy any of it’ – Heather

HEATHER WATSON has described her first round Wimbledon singles win over the American teenager Caty McNally as one of the most important of her career, even though she ‘didn’t enjoy any of it’.

Watson contrived to lose her serve four times during an error-strewn opening set in which the 17-year old McNally, who came through qualifying last week, failed to convert two set points.

However, after recovering her composure to win the first set tie-break for the loss of three points, the Sarnian moved up a gear to play unquestionably her best tennis of 2019 so far, triumphing 7-6, 6-2 in front of a partisan crowd on Court 12, one of the main arenas at the All England Club.

‘I’m a confidence player, so not having those wins in the last few weeks, I was maybe over-thinking a bit,’ said Watson, referring to her trio of recent first round exits at Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne.

The Sarnian will now face Anett Kontaveit, the Wimbledon number 20 seed from Estonia, tomorrow for a place in the third round.
