Fifth-wicket pair provide that winning application
GRIFFINS made far easier work of their latest PraxisIFM CI League win on Saturday than they had done a week earlier.
Although Tom Kirk was at the crease once again when they sealed victory over Old Victorians at the KGV, this time around there was no need for heroics from the captain who had guided them to their dramatic one-wicket win at Farmers in the previous round.
Instead, the skipper enjoyed having the best view in the ground of an excellent innings from Adam Martel as they put together an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 59 to see their side home with more than five overs to spare.
Fittingly, Martel brought up a deserved half-century with a straight six that saw Griffins past the winning post having been set 164 to win.
It was a finishing flourish that was somewhat out of character with the rest of his knock because, despite playing some lovely crisp shots, it had been a low-risk innings that was almost serene in its progress.
The OVs batsmen might have learnt something from Martel as, had they batted with his patience, they could have set their hosts a far more testing target.
Even another 20 runs could have made a big difference and having been bowled out with the best part of four overs unused, it was a harsh lesson learnt.
