Mills defeats Mills to book Royal a place in the CI final
THE Hampshire Sevens format has a habit of producing thrillers and the 2019 bailiwick-section final was no exception.
After the best part of four hours and with the sun having set on Monday evening, the clash between neighbours Royal Guernsey and L’Ancresse all boiled down to the last putt on the last green.
One thing was for sure, a Mills was going to be the hero.
As it turned out, it was Roland of the Royal who edged past his namesake Sean, now of L’Ancresse, to book his side a place in the Channel Islands final, which they will host, and move them to within one win of finals day at Petersfield GC in September.
It was fitting that the contest went right down to the wire as, bar the exception of a freak result that saw Emile Thompson cruise to victory against an out-of-sorts Geoff Meagher, each individual rubber was a nip-and-tuck affair with five going down the 18th and the other just one hole shorter.
