Club captain Tom Kirk had already rescued his side previously in this campaign and he repeated the feat with a crucial 64 after Walkovers had ripped through the Griffins top order at the College Field.

And in 16-year-old Luke Bichard, Kirk found a determined ally as they set up their side for what could prove to be a pivotal 19-run victory as Griffins are one of three sides on six points with two rounds of fixtures remaining.

‘We obviously got off to a bad start this morning but fair play to Walkovers – they bowled very well up front,’ Kirk said.

‘Bish batted extremely well and we managed to put on a decent partnership in the circumstances.

‘I think we ended up a bit short of runs but full credit to the lads as we always make it difficult when we’ve got the ball in hand.

‘They got off to a good start but once we took pace off with the spinners it changed the game.’

Meanwhile, at the KGV, Will Peatfield took an important five-wicket haul for Cobo as they got their campaign back on track with a 36-run victory over Old Victorians.

But while the island paceman did his job impressively in both removing the visitors’ top order and later returning to clean up the tail, it was young Max Sharpe who made the decisive intervention in claiming the big scalp of Jersey batsman Corey Bisson.

With the OVs skipper at the crease, his side were in with a fighting chance of chasing down their victory target of 227.

Earlier, it had been the epitome of a team effort on the batting front for Cobo as all of the top seven made double-figure contributions without any of them reaching 50.

Jonny Warr top scored with 42 while Breban added a vital 40 not out including the shot of the match – a glorious flow of the bat that sent the ball flying over extra cover for a magnificent six.
