Green Lions leave it late

THE pre-match headlines centred on one returning striker, but it was another who struck to salvage a point for Guernsey FC on Saturday.

Robbie Legg, who came on for Ross Allen after 68min. of the opening match of the new Isthmian South-East campaign, converted a 95th minute penalty to earn at 3-3 draw away to Faversham Town after fellow substitute Paris Pereira had been fouled.

Earlier, Tony Vance’s side had taken the lead through Will Fazakerley but found themselves 2-1 down at the interval.

GFC fell further behind 10 minutes into the second half before Fazakerley netted his second to halve the deficit to set up the dramatic finale.

‘We knew we’d get about 60 minutes out of Ross,’ said Vance on his returning forwards. ‘Robbie was always going to be a replacement for him because, again, we are building up with Robbie.

‘He has come back from a serious injury, so we had a good 30 minutes from him and a massive contribution getting us that equaliser.’

Vance added that it will take his side some time to hit their straps.

‘The quality wasn’t quite there in the right places, but what we’ve got to understand is that they’ve had eight or nine pre-season games, all the clubs have, whereas we’ve had nothing really so we’re into our “pre-season” now and you could see the players were getting tired at the end.

‘It was remarkable that they had the energy and the fitness to get a goal in the 95th minute, so that’s fantastic, but we did have a couple of people who were struggling.

‘I think if we had played Faversham perhaps in three or four weeks’ time when we have built up that match fitness then maybe we would have been talking about having three points, but in the end we had to try and grab something from it and we got a point, which is pleasing.’
