The home side came through the Channel Islands section final 5-2 yesterday in a match against St Clements that was much closer than the scoreline might suggest.

Despite the strong wind at L’Ancresse, the visitors enjoyed their day out and raised their game impressively, to such an extent that it was a toss up who would emerge victorious deep into the back nine.

Eventually, though, home advantage and the experience of playing regularly in those tricky links conditions saw Royal Guernsey across the line and looking forward to a weekend at Petersfield Golf Club next month.

‘I’ve been first team captain for four years. The first year was a bit of a struggle, we didn’t win much, but in the last three years I could probably count on one hand the amount of times we have lost, so there is a bit of a buzz around first-team and Hampshire Sevens matches around the club and everyone is just going out and getting results,’ said Tom Le Huray afterwards.

‘As long as it stays like that we’ll keep everyone happy.’

For Le Huray himself, victory was an extra belated birthday present having turned 29 on Saturday and he got the ball rolling for his side, earning their first point.
