Seb Skillen scored the winning goal as GFC overcame Phoenix Sports 2-1 with Ross Allen having earlier given the visitors a half-time lead before the hosts equalised on the hour.

Allen also had a penalty saved while Callum Stanton saved a spot kick, too.

‘I’m really pleased – deserved, no one can deny that, we were the better team today and the lads put a shift in,’ said manager Tony Vance.

‘We are often criticised by some people that we’re a little bit soft – today we weren’t soft.’

Meanwhile, Alex Scott, 16, made GFC history by becoming the club’s youngest player when he came on as a substitute.

‘Today, with the way we set ourselves up, I knew we’d only get 60 minutes out of Carlos [Canha] and with Alex I just thought it was perfect for him to come on,’ Vance said.

‘It doesn’t scare me putting him in there because I know his quality.

‘It was just fantastic to see him playing with complete confidence and he was a breath of fresh air. He just took to it and, to be honest, could have scored. Believe me, there’s more to come from this boy.’
