Cooper ends season on a high

PAUL COOPER put travel troubles and his early start behind him to speed to a superb title defence at the Condor Ferries SandAce Championship on Saturday.

Following the tireless work of head organiser Mike Clarke to find the visitors a last-minute replacement ferry service, to which Condor thankfully obliged, popular Yorkshireman Cooper strung out the ‘solos’ opposition with an unblemished streak of victories at Vazon.

Meanwhile, even though the transport issues led to a depleted sidecars field, Rob Wilson and Terry Saunters shared the delight of a second title together.

Discounting their win in the inaugural edition in 2012, the duo had almost perennially been the bridesmaids of the competition, yet this year proved different as they topped the podium.

The standard of racing had been impressive given that many riders – champion Cooper included – had only arrived on a last-resort overnight ferry.

Cooper had been on superb form throughout the day and consistently held off sturdy competition from the visitor-led field.
