Lunchtime feast served up as GFC rise to fourth

THEIR fans' long wait to see Guernsey FC on home soil this season is over – and they had plenty to cheer too.

After seven successive away fixtures to start their BetVictor Isthmian South-East campaign while refurbishment work was being carried out at Footes Lane, the Green Lions stepped out in front of the Garenne Stand faithful yesterday lunchtime and beat VCD Athletic 3-1 to rise to fourth in the table.

Perhaps fittingly it was captain Jamie Dodd who got the ball rolling, rising majestically to head home a corner on 31min.

In the second half, when a VCD Athletic attack broke down they were left short at the back, Will Fazakerley put Liam Mahon away with a 50-yard run on goal and he produced a beautifully composed chipped finish to beat Coxall.

The visitors halved the deficit from the penalty spot on 83min. before a mass altercation ended in one player from each side – Liam Mahon and Alastair Gordon – being shown red cards.

In the dying moments, though, Ross Allen put Fazakerley away from halfway and the big striker just managed to keep it in his feet long enough to tuck the ball home.
