North go top with late strikes

NORTH go top of the FNB Priaulx League table after taking 84 minutes to break down Rovers’ stubborn resistance at Northfield last night.

Defender Matt Ozanne bundled the ball home from a Ben Bullock free kick and two minutes later Scott Bougourd headed powerfully home to finally kill off the visitors who had edged the first half but faded after the break.

While St Martin’s may well displace North with a win at Blanche Pierre tonight, Jose Alvarez, the chocolate-and-blues coach, will regard this as a good last few days, especially after coming so close to dropping points at St Andrew’s three days earlier.

Tom Strawbridge was a surprise starter for the visitors in what was, realistically, a must-not-lose game for the Port Soif side, having already lost twice in the first four games. North sprung their own surprise – to spectators at least – leaving Danny Hale on the bench.
